About Us

The Choir

Established in 1994, The University Choir, HKUSTSU seeks to promote the art of choral singing, to arouse interest and to enhance choral singing standards of members from different schools of the University. Under the experienced guidance of the Music Director, Mr. Chiang Wai Man, The University Choir has progressed promisingly in both its performing repertoire as well as its performance proficiency and professionalism.

The University Choir also regularly performs for various occasions such as its yearly highlights - The Annual Performance, Fall Semester Performance, University Performances (e.g. My First Dinner@HKUST, Information Days, Alumni Gala Dinners etc.), Celebration Banquets etc. Recently in Year 2014, The University Choir has been granted Third Place in the 66th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, as recognition of quality performance.

On top of performances and weekly rehearsals, The University Choir organizes social activities such as the Orientation Day, Farewell Party etc., which have fostered unique bonds and nurtured strong friendships amongst choir members.

Ms. Lam Hoi Yan, Helen
Music Director and Conductor

Helen Lam Hoi Yan is a pianist, singer, flutist, choral conductor, handbell conductor and an avid music lover. She has strong commitment in music education and performance over the years.

Lam holds a master degree of Choral Conducting awarded by University of Saint Joseph. She also holds a bachelor degree of music (music education) from the Hong Kong Baptist University with first class honor, a bachelor degree of business administration from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and a postgraduate diploma in psychology from Chinese University of Hong Kong. Lam obtained the Licentiate of the Trinity College of Music London (LTCL) in piano performance with distinction, a Grade 8 Distinction in Voice, a Grade 8 Merit in Flute and a Grade 8 Merit in Theory from the Royal School of Music.

Lam studied choral conducting with Dr. Jerome Hoberman, Dr. Pedro Monteiro and Nancy Telfer, piano with Ma Cong, voice with Sofia Sierra and Jeffrey Leung, flute with Timothy Wilson, handbells with Ms Emily Li. Lam participated in various performances, including Musicarama (2012), Youth Nation at TVB, Ocean Park 30th Anniversary, Handbell Symposium (Florida, 2008 and Jeju 2014) and mass ring conductor of Hong Kong Handbell Festival from 2009-2011. She has been active in ringing with Double Mallet Ringers since 2008. She is a current chorus member of Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra Chorus and the Cantacore Society.

Community involvement is a high priority for Lam. She is a church musician, serving in worship band and directing handchime choir. She provides training in vocal, piano and conducting in church. She assisted Ms. Yasmin Li in music therapy groups from 2007 to 2011 as a volunteer musician.



就學期間,林氏師隨何博文博士、蒙泰羅博士及蘭茜德福學習合唱指揮,馬驄先生學習鋼琴,梁靜怡小姐學習聲樂,李潔瑤小姐學習手鈴。林氏曾參與不同類型的演出,包括音樂新文化 2012、無線電視「激優一族」手鈴表演、慶祝海洋公園三十週年表演,世界手鈴大會 (佛羅里達州 2008、濟洲 2014) 及香港手鈴節大合奏指揮 (2009-2011) 等。林氏現時為十一分音符手鈴隊、香港管弦樂團合唱團及雅謌合唱團成員 。


Dr. Isaac David Droscha

Isaac Droscha is an operatic Bass-Baritone who has performed numerous roles with various regional companies in the United States, including the Des Moines Metro Opera, Opera New Jersey, and Arbor Opera Theater, for which he is currently serving as a board member. He has also worked for Michigan Opera Theater in Detroit and The Motor City Lyric Opera on Wheels, and most recently performed as Escamillio in Musica Viva's production ofThe Story of Carmen in Hong Kong and as Leporello in a production of Don Giovanni at the Estates Theater in Prague, CZ. Other major roles from his repertoire include如title roles in Rossini's 11 barbiere di Siviglia and Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, the Musik Lehrer in Stauss'Ariadne aufNaxos, Nick Shadow in Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, and Dr. Falke in Strauss'Die Fledermaus.

He is also a prolific concert performer of oratorio and art song and has performed roles in Handel's Messiah, Faure's Reqiuem, Mozart's Reqiuem, and Hayden's The Creation. He has sung as a soloist with the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra, the Ann Arbor Symphonette, The Pro Arte Orchestra of Hong Kong. He received fellowships and Scholarships from the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Michigan for Study. He performs recitals regularly in the United States, Russia, and Hong Kong, and is a frequent collaborator with Hong Kong Musica Viva.

Isaac received his Doctorate in Vocal Performance from the University of Michigan and is a member of the academic fraternities Pi Kappa Lambda and Phi Kappa Phi.

Mr. Chiang Wai Man
Honorary Music Advisor

Mr. Chiang Wai Man graduated from the Music Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1977. In Chinese University, he studied vocal singing with well-known teachers like Michael Ryan, Nancy Zi, and Michael Rippon. Also, he studied conducting with Ng Chit Ko, Philip Cavanaugh, David Gwilt and Hugh Macdonald, and choral technique with Ma Ge Xun.

Mr. Chiang now serves as the choir conductor of the CCC Hop Yat Church (Ma On Shan Church), the On Shan Children's Choir, and the Cantacore Society, devoting himself in the promotion of sacred music and Chinese choral music. Chiang has been the choirmaster for the premiere and second performance of Chen Ning Chi's Choral symphony Chariots Rattle On and Jiang Xiang's Five Songs from Shijing, held by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, a part time lecturer of the Music Department of the CUHK and the Sacred Music Department of Alliance Bible Seminary. He is currently a music editor in the Chinese Christian Literature Council Ltd.
